Sydney Academy of Chess

4.4 out of 5 (View 70 reviews)

Sydney Academy of Chess is a team of people who have one passion in common: teaching chess to others. We’ve been doing it in New South Wales for 22 years.

The director of the Sydney Academy of Chess is Fide Master Brett Tindall. Brett has been coaching chess for over 26 years and has coached at all major events including Australian Junior Championships and World Junior events.

Brett is not only an experienced coach but also a very experienced player and has competed at both national and international level.

He has won many titles such as NSW junior champion, City of Sydney Junior and Senior Champion; he has also won several age titles at Australian Junior events.

Trained coaches

All of Sydney Academy’s coaches are highly proficient players themselves. Coaches are taught effective teaching methods as well as ways of managing groups of children of all ages. Our chess coaches meet regularly to discuss ways in which our teaching can improve.

Continual Improvement

Sydney Academy of Chess is continually seeking ways of improving its service to schools and the public. We encourage our chess coaches to improve their own playing ability. We also look to teaching methods overseas. Currently three of our coaches hold the titles of Fide trainers.

Mission Statement

Sydney Academy of Chess is an organisation with the purpose of providing a quality chess coaching service to schools and individuals. We ultimately aim to bring an appreciation of chess into the minds of all Australians

Sydney Academy of Chess is the biggest chess-coaching firm in NSW, coaching thousands of school children around Sydney every week. Our students range from absolute beginners to NSW and Australian Junior title winners as well as Australian representatives at many World Junior events. Our base is Sydney Chess Centre: Level 1, 30a George street, Burwood.

Decent facility that is run well. Relaxed atmosphere. Good learning environment for kids. Convenient location, close to public transport. Parking however, is quite scarce in the vicinity, so allow additional time.

I was a coach at the Sydney Academy of Chess, but I was the one who learnt.

I joined the academy in 2017. I had come to Australia from India a few months before. I was extremely introvert, and was taking time adjusting to a new culture.

On my first day, six children were staring at me with their large curious, wide-opened eyes, waiting for me to begin. With a trembling voice, I began to teach back rank checkmates.

The next time, I had a larger class. The students were chatting among themselves, and I no idea how to get their attention. One of them came to me, and indicated that I should loudly clap my hands. As I did, all the students obediently looked at me and became silent.

Over the next 2 years, teaching chess made me more confident and accustomed to the new culture. On occasions, my students helped me improve my chess thinking as well. It was an enriching experience that helped me grow. I am truly grateful that I got this opportunity.

Very kind and cohesive community of chess enthusiasts, welcoming players of all abilities and all walks of life. It is an encouraging environment and has helped me get back into the game that I have loved for so long. Tournaments are fierce and competitive, being taken seriously and organised well whilst maintain a strong level of respect and decorum.

This is the best chess organisation I've worked for. The company has very hard working people who aim to deliver the best chess education to schools and private students. The most important thing for me at the organisation, is the culture of respect and honour that has been created by the leadership team :) I highly recommend the Sydney Academy of Chess!!

They have been constantly harrassing us with phone calls and emails for the last 2 months for a chess tournament that my son attended in 2022 (two years after the event took place) ! We have already paid for it and their accounts system seems like non-competent. Thinking of lodging a consumer complaint if this continues.

From the response provided the entire blame is some how put on the parents, they will never admit their short comings / mistakes. Also the primary question is why is the constant follow up done 2 years after the event ? Why wasn't this followed up earlier - there wre 2 financial years that ended when the accounts were reconciled. And then hounding parents that they were not contactable during holiday period - when we could have been overseas - pathetic !

Need to ask us a question?
