Before student(s) start at Kumon, we will usually organise a parent orientation to explain in-depth how Kumon works and what for parents to prepare. After that, the student(s) will attend a diagnostic test at the centre. The results and observations will be shared after the test and we will also advise the best starting point for the student(s) to begin with the program. Kumon aims to build confidence from day 1 by starting children on worksheets that they can complete easily, quickly and with a near-perfect score. This confidence will create an enthusiasm to continue to do worksheets and build their skills through the gradual learning process.

About the provider

As an organisation, Kumon provides supplementary, after-school learning programmes for children. Spread across 57 countries, our learning method aims to foster sound, capable individuals who are able to independently carve out a path for themselves in life.

At Kumon we are dedicated to fully pursuing the potential of each individual student.

Kumon Instructors provide just enough guidance for their students to be able to do the exercises on their own. Our programmes aim to furnish students with the ability to advance to high school level material through self-learning as early as possible in life. Kumon students study independently from an early age and develop both a high level of academic ability and the ability to learn independently, or what we at Kumon refer to as ‘self-learning’ ability. As a result, our students build self-esteem, learn that they can do anything if they try, and develop the ability to take on new challenges for themselves.

After children who have done Kumon grow up and enter the workforce, they are able to think of solutions by themselves even when faced with difficult challenges. The skills that students gain through doing Kumon go on to help them achieve their goals and dreams.

The Kumon Programmes aim to develop:

★ Calculation ability and reading ability

★ Concentration

★ Discipline to maintain a daily study and reading habit

★ Confidence to learn independently.

The Kumon Maths programme develops quick, precise calculation skills necessary for the study of high school mathematics. Only topics essential for high school mathematics are included. They include number recognition, counting and writing; the four basic operations of addition, subtraction, multiplication and division; fractions and decimals; algebra, equations, functions and calculus.

Each worksheet builds on what has come before and prepares students for what comes next. Students progress step by step, towards the goal of advanced high school mathematics.

The Kumon English worksheets develop a high level of reading comprehension ability. To inspire students to read widely, the worksheets contain more extracts from published texts than any other reading programme in the world.

They are arranged in order of increasing difficulty, from the simplest to the most complex. Audio files support the student’s progress, as do Kumon’s recommended reading lists.

The Kumon method has four key aspects.

1. Learning at the ‘just-right’ level

Kumon ensures that students always study worksheets at their ‘just-right’ level – the spot between study material that is too easy and too difficult.

2. Self-learning

When students advance ahead of school grade level in the Kumon worksheets, they learn for themselves what they are yet to be taught at school. When they encounter something new, they study the example, draw on previous learning and give it a try. Students try, and try again, until they finally get it.

3. The Kumon worksheets

Kumon worksheets enable students to develop self-learning skill.

4. Kumon Instructors

Kumon Instructors discover and draw out the potential of each individual student. Our Instructors achieve this through observation of each student, paying careful attention to academic ability and personality. Instructors then provide effective support to ensure that a student always studies at the ‘just-right’ level. Instructors track and acknowledge each individual student’s growth, and offer praise and encouragement.
